- 1969: ARPANET is brought online
- Developed by DARPA
- Basically, linked, global computers
- At first: Four computers at US universities
- 1972: Email on ARPANET, by Ray Tomlinson
- 1987: 10,000 Internet hosts
- 1989: Peter Deutsch developed Archie
- The first automated, searchable index of online files
- 1989: Tim Berners-Lee invents WWW + HTML

- TBL hoped to connect distributed physics researchers
- His system had 3 components:
1. Uniform addresses
2. Protocol for transmitting information
3. Language for encoding information - It was called WorldWideWeb.

- 1991: First draft of HTML is online
- 1993: First graphical web browser, Mosaic
–Developed by Marc Andreessen - 1994: Netscape Navigator is released
- 1995: Internet Explorer is released
- 1995: 10 million Internet hosts
- 1996: CSS becomes a W3C recommendation
- 1997: Dynamic HTML support in 4.0 browsers
- 1998: XML becomes a W3C recommendation
- 2000: 75 million Internet hosts
- 2004: 275 million Internet hosts
